A Featured Head On Exhibition

After being widely known for her curatorial role, advising and mentoring photographers at Stills Gallery (for 26 years) and then in a new model of photo art support business ARTHERE (since 2008) here Sandy dusts off her early portraits to display her roots as a portrait photographer.

In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s she was especially known for her portraiture and documentary storytelling. Over the years she became integrally involved in the photographic landscape of Australia helping hundreds of Photographic artists to realise their work through exhibition and to grow their profile as artists.

It is little known that during the 1980s and 90s Sandy worked as a stringer for The Age Newspaper when they needed a photographer based in Sydney. All the celebrities - actors, models, writers, artists, musicians - seemed to pass through Sydney before heading on to Melbourne. The Age needed a good portrait photographer to take the shots and get them down post haste for publication. All these images were created on film. They were processed and hand printed by the photographer in the darkroom. This collection from the artist's archive is a wonderful slice of time and a reminder of how we were. I love this pic of Jane Campion - a sister New Zealander to Sandy - blossoming and confident in her early career.

‘The world was my oyster and what a privilege and an excitement to sit in on the interviews by journalists like Candy Baker and to have conversations with such a broad range of artists and intelligentsia.’
