Sandy Edwards is a key figure in Australian photography – an important contributor and influencer.
Widely known for her curatorial, advising and mentoring roles with photographers at Stills Gallery – considered one of Australia’s leading contemporary photography galleries - Sandy worked with Stills Gallery for 26 years until its closure in 2017.
In 2008, while continuing work with Stills Gallery, Sandy set in place a new business model of photo art/artist support – Arthere – where she continues today to curate, advise and mentor photographic artists.
In the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s – back to the beginning of her career – Sandy Edwards became especially known for her portraiture and documentary storytelling. Her style personal and full of empathy and connection.
Over these last 50 years she became integrally involved and deeply established in the photographic landscape of Australia – with her own photographic work and with helping hundreds of photographic artists to realise their work through exhibition and to grow their profile as artists – through both Stills and Arthere.
Now with her upcoming exhibition, Showing My Age: Portraits taken for The Age Newspaper 1980s/90s, Sandy gets to dig deep into her impressive archive and display her roots as a portrait photographer.
